Speech & Language Development Australia is committed to advocating for those with communication disabilities, as well as their families, caregivers, and communication professionals. We are excited to support the goals of the ICP and ensure everybody has the right to communicate.
Who are Speech and Language Development Australia?
Speech & Language Development Australia is the nation’s peak body supporting and advocating for the needs of children and young people with speech, language, and related disorders.
For more than 40 years our not-for-profit organisation has developed a unique, multidisciplinary approach to helping the 1 in 14 children with language disorder find their voice.
When people have a voice their thoughts, feelings, and aspirations are recognised by others. They possess the capacity to make an impact, both on their own personal situation, as well as the broader community, through their actions and words.
Our vision is to be the leader in enabling better outcomes for children and young people with disability for whom language is their primary disorder.
We provide therapy and education in addition to leading on professional development, research, and advocacy initiatives related to speech and language disorders. These services include our clinics, e-therapy programs, School Support Service, and The Glenleighden School in Brisbane. We partner with the community, health professionals, educators, and families to help children and young people find their voice.
Leading the Way in Interventions for Speech and Language Disorders
The Glenleighden School
The Glenleighden School was established in 1979 as the only Prep to Year 12 school in Australia dedicated solely to students with language disorders. Glenleighden provides comprehensive, intensive multidisciplinary programs which are highly individualised, addressing the full scope of the students’ developmental and learning needs. The Glenleighden School uses a model of integrated, specialist service, and constantly aims to be a ‘centre of excellence’ in this field of disability.
School Support Service
In 1994 Speech & Language Development Australia received Commonwealth Government assistance. From tiny beginnings, the Outreach Program has grown to having bases in Brisbane and Townsville. The program has relaunched as the School Support Service in 2016 to reflect the increase in services available, both funded and fee for service. The School Support Service and professional development program continues to support students with language disorders across Queensland to enhance their participation, inclusion, and educational outcomes.
Our clinics in Brisbane and Townsville offer multidisciplinary allied health services for children and young people with speech, language, and related disorders. Our teams are staffed by expert speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and psychologists all with a passion for working with children and young people. We are also proud to reach regional and remote Australians via e-therapy to remove any barriers to accessing world class therapy.
