The ICP Presents & Exhibits at World Congress in Dublin

The International Communication Project (ICP) presented and exhibited at the 30th World Congress of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP) in Dublin, Ireland, this past August.

Besides leading a session giving IALP attendees an overview of the ICP, a separate ICP panel presentation addressed the subject of the global reach for communication as a basic human right. It featured five presenters:

  • Dr. Gloria Weddington (Guyana)
  • Dr. Shyamani Hettiarachchi (Sri Lanka)
  • Mr. Dien Le Khan, represented on the panel via video by Professor Lindy McAllister (Vietnam)
  • Ms. Nana Akua Owasu, represented on the panel via video by Ms. Karen Wylie (Ghana)
  • Ms. Sue Park (Fiji)

(L-R) Ms. Sue Park (Fiji), Dr. Shyamani Hettiarachchi (Sri Lanka), Ms. Karen Wylie (representing Ms. Nana Akua Owasu via video from Ghana), Professor Lindy McAllister (representing Mr. Dien Le Khanh via video from Vietnam), Dr. Gloria Weddington (Guyana), and Pauline Ackermann, Panel Chair (IASLT).

Other ICP activity at the Congress included an all-day meeting of representatives from all of the ICP’s founding organisations. They discussed a number of important matters, including the ICP’s advocacy strategy for engaging global health policymakers. They also met with IALP representatives about the possibilities for collaborating on future endeavours.

Altogether, the profile of the ICP was raised at the IALP Congress, which closed on an exciting note. The New Zealand Speech-language Therapists’ Association, an ICP founding organisation, learned that its bid to host the IALP Congress in 2022 had been accepted. The ICP is pleased that one of its founders will be hosting that event and it looks forward to being active and engaged at the 2022 Congress.
